Survey Hints at Future Digg Enhancements

I just took a survey posted at the top of Digg. While most of the questions where standard fare for marketing surveys (how many sites I visit per week, what type of content I like, etc), there was a specific set of questions related to my usage of Digg, and one of them in particular asked to rate which future enahcements whould I like the most to see implemented.

I though it would be interesting to share the options presented and get some comments from the digg community on them. While some of them have been mentioned before (like the “Suggestion Engine”) other were a surprise to me.

This is what they are considering to create:

  • Digg Groups allows you to create and join groups on specific topics, so you can share and discover content with people that share your interests. Discover new content on whatever your interests may be, from more obscure topics that may never make it to the homepage (rock climbing, tea, indie rock) to larger topics of your choosing (global warming, the onion, LOLcats).
  • Alerts will let you set up a range of customized e-mail alerts such as weekly or daily digests, a summary of stories on a specific topic with a specified number of Diggs, when a submitted story becomes popular on Digg, and stories suggested by friends. Alerts let you customize the content on Digg that’s most relevant to you.
  • A NSFW (Not Safe For Work) Filter, so you can choose whether to see or not see content that a general user of the site may find objectionable.
  • Digg Achievements is a system that provides awards for your accomplishments on Digg, so others will be aware of the contributions that you’ve made to the site.
  • Story Suggest is a recommendation engine that suggests stories to you based on what you have Dugg and what your interests are. Story Suggest lets you discover even more relevant and interesting content on Digg
  • Customize Digg is a way to view the most recently popular content from a favorite site or blog, like nytimes.com or engadget.com.
  • Remote Digg will extend your Digg experience to your other favorite sites, so you can Digg other things that are important to you, including restaurants, books, causes, products, and services. Your Digg profile will consolidate and highlight things you Digg on other sites that you want to share with your friends.

I personally dont know how much value the “Achievements” would bring (it sounds much like Xbox Live), but most of the other stuff sounds really interesting. The most intriguing is “Remote Digg”: it almost sound like they want to convert my profile page in a startup page like netvibes or Google IG, with pieces of content from all around the web in one place.

Of course, given the time the the digg development team has taken just to release their newest enhancement (the images section, along with the new category structure and submission system), I would bet that we diggers will have a lot of time to speculate about these future features.
